Be A Father To Your Child - Ed O.G. & Da Bulldogs
This is my hiphop video pick for this year's black history month. I remember talking about this video back in the 7th or 8th grade. It's too bad mainstream hiphop doesn't make songs like this anymore.

EO Teaches what?
Eastern Orthodoxy Teaches What? (From Todd Friel's Way of the Master Radio, September 20th 2007, hour 1 at about the 15 minute mark.)
Three years ago a protestant friend from HolyCultureRadio told me about the podcast, and she wanted me to check if what Todd said was accurate. I sent WOTM Radio a modified email of what I told my friend below:
He has somethings right but was wrong in other areas. He doesn't understand what's going on. He is trying to look at it from his Western mindset.
1.) We believe God is both "Transcendent" as well as "Immanent"
Transcendence means God is unknowable for He dwells outside of Time and space and there will always be an aspect of God that will be incomprehensible. This distinction is what we call the Essence vs Energies distinction.
The form of theology that comes from this is what we call "Apophatic Theology" ....God is not this and God is not that.......etc.
Immanence means God is dwelling in time and space. Or that God dwells within Creation itself. This means we will be able to know "something" about God. It means we can know God in some form. This is where Catophatic theology is formed from. It is formed by what we know of God in "time and space".......God is this and God is that......ect.
Some examples of what we can know about God would be such things as "epiphanies", "Divine Revelation", "The Incarnation", Knowing about the Godhead through creation....etc. We know God through His Grace/graces which is Something we would call Divine energies.
Orthodoxy just knows we will never know "ALL" of what God is in His "entirety for we can't know God's Essence". God is Infinite whereas we are finite. This is all we are saying. Knowing God in his true essence is impossible for God is Infinite. No matter what name we give to God we will never be able to describe Him fully. Why? Because He is both understandable as well as incomprehensible all at the same time. So in either form whether apophatic(the negative) or Catophatic(the positive) we believe we can know God in some form. We just believe we can't know Him in all His fullness for God is Infinite.
The ancient Jews knew God but they didn't know God at the level we know God today. The Angels know God but they won't know God in the way we will when we are glorified. Also at the level we know God now is only partial. We will know God at a higher level when we are glorified, but even then we won't know God in his fullness for He is Infinite. We believe that for Eternity we will be knowing more and more about God and learning more and more about Him .....Everyday for Eternity will be like a new day in learning about His Vastness.
I hope I didn't loose you by saying all this. In America and even in Europe, it's not uncommon to find Orthodox who embrace both Catophatic as well as Apophatic way of speaking. Right now I embrace more of Catophaticism because I come from a protestant background.
Alot of the Buddhist converts I know embrace more of the Apophatic way of speaking because it's probably what they are more use to coming from that background.
In some ways, one balances the other. Apophatic theology is stressed more in Orthodoxy because Catophaticism has it's limits in what it can accurately say. Whereas Apophaticism seems more unlimited.
2.) Also the Eastern Christian mindset when it comes to learning is different from the Western Christian mindset. I will use the college example. When it comes to learning, Orthodoxy would be more about Labs than class lectures.
Whereas Western Christianity is more about class lectures than labs.
Eastern Christianity believes that one learns more from hands on experience. Whereas western Christianity believes that one learns more from text books.
Another way of saying this is Eastern Christianity believes that if you want to learn about a Lion it would be best to be locked in a cage with one instead of reading a book about one.
This is what it comes down to. If you "say" you know something.... well how do you know you know it? And how can we know you know it? To us the whole person(mind, body, and soul) must know it. ......Or else you are just lying to yourself as well as to others.
We can see this in 1st John
1 John 3:18
Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
Most Christians before the printing press had to "Hear" the word of God and memorize it and ponder on it in their hearts. That is how they learned the word of God back then. Eastern Orthodoxy still stresses "hearing" the word of God, because that's the way it's always been for 2,000 years. Now in modern Times we do read the scriptures more......especially converts like myself. But hearing the word of God and pondering on it is almost a lost art in the west.
I believe 1st John 3:18 was saying the samething as James when James wrote about faith plus works. James is really talking about "words" plus works.......or words plus true faith.
In like manner we "know" something not by words alone but by "experiencing" what we say. This is true faith.
3.) In regards to us being gods.....well we were made in God's Image. We are His Images. And as Christians we are united with God's Son as well as With His Holy Spirit. And One day we will be glorified.
So yes we are gods in some sense of the word and we will be gods when we are glorified.
God became man so that man could become divine.
God forever partook of our nature so that we can forever partake of His. Alot of the classic christian greats that I know believed this. It's not talked about much in today's World. It's not Mormonism.....the fact that he said that only showed his ignorance of the topic.
4.) It is true, we are not Pantheists. We are what is called PAN-ENTHEISTS
It goes back to God being both Transcendent as well as Immanent. We believe that All of creation dwells within God.
God holds it all together within Himself.
Colossians 1:17
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
This does not mean that the creation is a part of God. That is another misconception. It just means that creation dwells in God. ...Like a fish dwelling in the Ocean. The fish is not part of the Ocean.....they are two different things. Likewise, creation is different from the Creator. This is why I believe God controls everything......and I mean everything...... And this is also why I understand synergy the way I do.
5.) Our understanding of Justification is tied to our doctrine of theosis. Justification and Sanctification are two sides of the same coin. When you have one you will see the other.
They are really "simultaneous".
In debates people like to put one in front of the other but it doesn't have to be that way. For when you are Justified you are also at that same moment "set aside"
6.) Almost everything in Orthodoxy is filled with Scripture. The same is true with Icons. In many ways it's nothing more than scripture in painted form. If we can have scripture on audio tapes and C.D.'s then why can't we have it in Movies, Paintings, and plays as well?
But I guess you can call it a commentary to scripture because they are Theological in content......They explain alot of passages. So Icons in Eastern Christianity are Theological works. And then you have Icons that are historical works as well.
To learn more about Icons, check out Fr. Jerome's lecture on icons as well as Mother katherine's lecture on icons.
6.) If you look at the rule of St. Vincent of Lerins it is Scripture first and the fathers as a commentary to scripture second. Well it's a bit deeper than that but that's the general rule. Scripture didn't come down to us in a vacuum.
http://www.holycultureradio.com/foru...ad.php?t=21721
"From the Commonitory of St Vincent of Lerins (4th Century)"
Also for the most part we don't have statues. The Russians might have some, but for the most part we are statue-less. We mostly have paintings/Icons.
So they were wrong when they said "statues everywhere". If anything it would be paintings on the wall.
Most Protestants in Eastern Europe don't understand that if they are going to do anything like have a T.V. ministry or something like that then they are going to have to have the Orthodox involved.
What they need to do is follow the example of T.B.N. (the Trinity broadcasting Network in Eastern Europe)
People don't understand that every group under the sun are rushing to convert people over there. so I don't have a problem with the Orthodox pushing their weight around in order to preserve Orthodoxy.
However, I don't believe in violence and stuff like that.
You can check the mp3's of these converts below to get a better feel of what we are like from the inside looking out:
Fr. Patrick's Journey, Fr. Guillquest's Journey as well as Fr. Gregory Hogg's should help you understand Orthodoxy a bit better. Orthodxy isn't perfect but it ain't bad either.

"1. I have continually given the greatest pains and diligence to inquiring,
from the
greatest possible number of men outstanding in holiness and in
doctrine, how I can secure a kind of fixed and, as it were, general and guiding
principle for distinguishing the true Catholic Faith from the degraded
falsehoods of heresy. And the answer that I receive is always to this effect;
that if I wish, or indeed if anyone wishes, to detect the deceits of heretics
that arise and to avoid their snares and to keep healthy and sound in a healthy
faith, we ought, with the Lord's help, to fortify our faith in a twofold manner,
firstly, that is, by the authority of God's Law, then by the tradition of the
Catholic Church.

趙展彤 (13 year old Valentina Cho) raps "Don't Waste Your Life"
I knew that alot of people in Africa and Europe were into American Christian rap, but I never knew people were listening to it in Asia. Cool stuff! This is a hard song to rap, but she did it perfectly.
The original song(the second verse is missing in the official video due to long distance issues between the artists. I went to school with the one in plats in the video)

eshon Burgundy- "The Nikon Flash"
One of the best rappers on the planet! But not to many people know about him.
The Nikon Flash:
eshon Burgundy- The Evidence of things not seen(200Bars): (He took this back to the late 70's to the early 80's. Back in those days rappers rhymed for 10 to 20 minutes straight without any hooks or breaks)
I'm sorry y'all, but I like christian rap. I've been into it since highschool. It helped me stay away from gangs, drugs, alcohol(back in those days....now I only drink a few times a year...mostly in social settings), sex(for a good 9 year run) , and it broke me and my old childhood friends up......for a good number of years.
I'm cool with most of them now, but mostly from a distance.....some of them still sell drugs, and I don't want anything to do with that.....I won't even eat their food because of it....long story based on what happened to another childhood friend who is now strung out on heroin.....and so what I do is take them out to eat(once to 3 times a year is when we mostly meet and talk, other than that I really don't see them),. I buy the food, and I buy the drinks. I pray for them, I give them christian rap C.D.'s, and if they need someone to talk to I'm there, but until they want to change, I can't really do anything else for them.....and so it is what it is.
I'm sorry for the rant!

Some Old Friends of Mine
I've known them since my days at Tuskegee University, back then they went to Morehouse, and we met through a college christian ministry called Campus Outreach. They would have retreats in both Georgia and Alabama, and students from different schools would be there. And so that's how we met. Sometimes we would drive to ATL to see them, which was about a 90 minute drive from T.U. on Interstate 85. They are good peoples, and they make positive music/hiphop/rap. It's been 5 years since I last saw them in person (in Atlanta), but they seem to be doing well. This video is off their new album that just came out last March. They are awesome, and their music is too.
The Remnant: (Know This)
I've known Sho since my sophmore year at Tuskegee University. Back then we use to argue alot, but he's real cool peoples! He was really involved with Campus Outreach back in those days. I never was really a part of it. I just went to the Bible studies, ate the food, and went on most of the small retreats. But he was actually discipled through it. He also found his future wife through the outreach. He later moved to Texas where he finished school and where his older brother was, and recently he just moved to Atlanta to help plant a church. I haven't seen him in person in ages...well years, but I still see him online, but you know, it's not the same. But this video below is off his new album that just dropped last March as well. The Album is called Lions and Liars.
Sho Baraka: (We can be more)
Believin Stephen and Me at the HolyCultureRadio EastCoast gathering back in like 2005. And yes, I had a gotee back then.
I don't know lil Steve all that well, but he's from Pittsburgh, and he's cool peoples. He lived in Philly for alot of years, but recently returned back to the Burgh:
Most of the other christian rappers I mostly know from being online or just meeting them at certain events, but I don't really know them know them.

Jin...From battle rapper to Christian rapper?!
Jin, shares his thoughts.
The Song in question: (Welcome to the Light Club)
My thoughts about the issue as seen from Holyculture.net (I only said what I said because the person I responded to is very vocal about theological heavy calvinistic rap, and he doesn't like christian rappers that are almost secular / light on theology, and so, this is the context of my response)
Quote:
My Response:
Who in the real world ever put the mic down when they first changed gears? So why do you expect him to?
And even if he did, that wouldn't mean you would like him, for if he went to the wrong church, and was tought under the wrong doctrines, then you wouldn't want him to be discipled(by his church that you may or may not like or agree with).
So it's all subjective really. I say let him be himself, and express what he wants to express........right or wrong. In my eyes, it's gonna be wrong somewhere.......on some topic regardless, just like most christian rap is.
I theologically dissagree with alot of it. So let dude be true to what he is right now, on the journy he is on right now.
For I won't feel it, if he ain't real to what he is right now.......flaws and all.
If you guys turn him into just another carbon copy Calvinistic rapper, then it's just gonna be another boring album that will eventually collect dust after a few spins.
Because it ain't real to what he is right now, and he will try hard to be like someone else instead of being true to himself. His stuff will sound all forced and boring. So I say, let dude be dude and let him be true to what he is right now.
If you change him, you will only change him from one error to another error.........in my book."

Quote:
My Response:
It's not that I don't care. I do, It's just that as an Orthodox Christian I know that if he tries to spit high doctrine on the mic or get real theological with it, then he's going to be in error somewhere.....regardless. This is one of the reasons why I like listenning to alot of possitive theological light protestant christian rappers. And protestant christian rappers that talk about their actual experiences with God in their everyday life. I like that way more than TULIP Rap.
So it's not that. I want him to be himself, because I really want to hear his personal experiences with God from how he is able to interprete things right now.
You see, in Orthodoxy, True Knowledge.....epistemology comes from actual experience, and not just mere classroom book stuff.
If you want to learn about a Lion, you don't sit in a class lecture and read books about one. No, what you do is lock yourself in a cage with one. That's how you learn. For True knowledge is not with the tongue or mind alone. True knowledge is of the whole man....for the whole man must learn what it means to both fear and love God. Our hands must know it, our feet must know it, our legs must know....the whole man.
So when it comes to Theology and the art of studying God.....Eastern Christianity says:
Prayer = Studying God
Living the Christian life = Studying God
Actual experience with God = Studying God
Along with hearing about God from His Holy Word. So it's all the above.....we need it all if we really want to know God for ourselves.
And this is why I want to hear his own experience from his own lips, in the way he knows how to express it. I want to know how he really thinks and feels before people get to him, and mess him all up. But if he is a truth seeker, then hopefully he will eventually find what he is looking for. It should be obvious what I would like him to be, but it's not about me, and what I want......I can't control him nor his environment. The onlything I can do is pray for dude.

Quote:

I was just asking the question of whether he should put it down or not to see what you guys thought. It's true that others haven't done that which is why we have the famous examples that I mentioned... guys who just can't step away from the sinful lyrics they're known for.
And I didn't say anything about being a Calvinistic rapper. Whether I like him as an artist or not has nothing to do with me wanting him to not make the same mistakes as others have made. The rapping stuff should be secondary while finding out who he is in Christ should be first.
I found it interesting that you want him to be himself whether right or wrong. That sounds like you don't even care about the dude and how he lives his life...

Orthodox Christians who are into rap, hiphop, poetry, spoken word, trip hop.........ect.
We were brainstorming for awhile, but we really don't know what to do just yet. The link below is the place where we were talking about it and what to do. We agreed that Saint Moses should be the Patron Saint. But we disagreed over how we should start. Should it be done through a pay webhosting site or through a free one? The bandwidth was our main concern, but since we are small, we could just start out on a free low bandwidth site, and then transfer to a bigger bandwidth pay webhosting as we grow. But there are alot of things we need besides webhosting, we need a priest or deacon/sub-deacon oversite as well. And so, it's gonna take some time.
The reason why we are doing this is because alot of us, just grew tired of the Protestant and Roman Catholic hiphop/rap sites we were on, and just wanted something of our own.

HCR is at it again
An artist posted a song for Calvin's birthday.....however the song is called Apostate Arminian, and here.
The poster is Anonymous, so my question is this, .....why stay anonymous? Also....where was this person when I invited the Arminians to HCR?
What I find funny is that when I invited my Arminian friends over to defend Arminianism, the Calvinists had nothing to say. It seems like they only wanna say something when no one is looking......or when the Arminians are not around to defend themselves.
The song misinterprets and misrepresents the arminian perspective........so if you are going to attack something.........at least get what you are attacking right. If not, then put the M.I.C. down.
Also, if you are going to write a song against something........at least do it with "tact". As an Orthodox Christian, I have to be "tactful" at all times on a mostly calvinistic protestant christian rap website. For anything and everything I say can be seen as being offensive..........so having "people skills" is a must.

HolyCultureRadio is looking for a few good Arminians to present their case against Calvinism
http://www.holyculture.net/forum/showthread.php?t=39365 (theology section, in order to see the theology section, first you have to register)
or
Holy Culture Radio Forum
I'm leaving for Indie so I told them that I would invite the Arminians I know in the blog world over, since they would be more than able to not only defend Arminianism, but also critique Calvinism. It will also balance the forum since most of them are Calvinists and Reformed.

Dwayne Tryumf - 777 Intro
The last time I posted a video of Dwayne Tryumf, I got blasted by him for saying that Lecrea and the others at ReachRecords were trying to turn him into a Calvinist. This time I won't make such a comment. Instead, I will just post the video.
His album should be coming out soon.

Dwayne Tryumf

Is an up and coming christian rap artist from Great Britain. Below is a Youtube of one of his videos
Dwayne Tryumf on a British news station.
Dwayne Tryumf featured on "Don't Waste your Life" by Lecrea on his new album called "Rebel". He says the words "I carry a Johny Mac", for those that don't know christian hiphop slang. It means "I carry a John Macauthor Study Bible". It's a very popular "Calvinistic" study Bible in some christian rap circles.
Dwayne Tryumf on Wade-O radio (a christian hiphop radio show):
The Mp3 Quicktime Switchpod (It's about a 2 hour show)
To hear it on Itunes (It's about a 2 hour show)

In the interview he said that he was being Discipled by Lecrea or Reach Records....I forgot which. But we all know what that means. It means they are trying to turn him into a Calvinist. I know he wants to be on Reach Records but that's a too high price to pay.

Cruz, shares how both "pain & hope" molded his music
I knew how he got into christian rap, but I never knew this aspect of it. In his blog, he shares, some of the hurt and pain he went through, and how it molded his style of rap.
To read the rest, please go to his blog at cdero.wordpress.com.
This was when he was in highschool (1993). Cruz goes into more detail about why the song was made, and the whole history and context of that period in his life. (as seen on his blog)
This next video happened years later. Cruz is the last one rapping (in a crew of 5 or 6).......about the 3:30 minute mark.
I forgot when this video was made. I wanna say 1999, but I really don't know. But Cruz has come a long way, and I always was a fan of his music.
I could be wrong, but I think he is a teacher and a boxer now.
But what I found interesting in that highschool video is that he was talking about social justice in 1993. Alot of the Calvinists that Cruz and I both know, gave him a hard time about this. They saw it as liberal, as if he changed or something. But this video is proof, that he always cared about social issues. So I think the Calvinists that turned their backs on him should apologize. They owe him an apology.

"The following is a video of me rapping when I was a senior
in high school. The school was Lancaster Mennonite High School, a school where I
have great memories. However, some miserable guys there did not like the fact
that I was a die hard urbanite using rap as means of praising God and
communicating His word. Their god was created in their image–white and also
racist. I share this video made by a friend, who kept it all these years, to
demonstrate how the rap was birthed out of pain and hope. Pain because there
were people who hated me just because I thought different, looked different, and
was different. It was a painful time because on one hand the few Latinos and
African Americans at the school recruited from the inner city thought I was
holier than thou because I was vocal about my faith and called all Christians to
the standard of Christ likeness. On the other hand I was despised by a few white
people who hated my culture, my land, and my ethnicity. My time there was lonely
and painful yet God used that time to mold me into the man I am today."

Cdero critique's Ras Kass
Ras Kass's song is very vulgar and filled with explicit lyrics. But Cruz (Cdero) did a good job responding to what was said in the song.
http://cdero.wordpress.com/2008/07/30/the-miseducation-of-ras-kass/#comment-215
" The following video is explicit and is an inside look at what many Blacks around my neighborhood and in low income communities in general think about when it comes to Christianity.
My comments are below:
Allow me to address Ras’ assertion that the cross and the symbol of a fish are craven images prohibited by God’s laws. While Ras has all the right to judge Christians guilty of idolatry, he can certainly do that and name a number of things that Christians are guilty of, nevertheless his assertion that the cross and the symbol of the fish as graven images mentioned in Ex 20 and in Duet 5 is misleading. First, lets look at scripture itself.
Exodus 20:4-6
You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,but showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Leviticus 26:1-2
You shall make for yourselves no idols and erect no carved images or pillars, and you shall not place figured stones in your land, to worship at them; for I am the Lord your God. You shall keep my sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:4
Do not turn to idols or make cast images for yourselves: I am the Lord your God.
Other passages are Ex 20:22-26,Deut 4:15-24,11:16-17,27:15.
As you can see, these graven images were objects that were worshiped.
Secondly, the law does not prohibit engravings, or other works of art in general. For instance, the Priest’s garment had pictures of pomegranates (Ex. 28:33-34) and the mercy seat had two images of angels made out of gold (Ex 25:18-22). All of these things had a religious function to it. The Law does not forbid religious use of ornaments or works of art but forbids worship of these things in place of God.
That being said, the symbol of a cross or a fish are not idols for Christians but symbols.
This brings me to my third point, the symbols of the cross and the fish direct worship to the true God. The cross symbolizes Jesus’ sacrificial love for us while the symbol of the fish has its roots within the first three centuries of the Church. It symbolized what Jesus said in Mark 1:17, “And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” In other words, the disciples were used to extend Jesus’ ministry.
Concerning the manuscripts, yes, there are no originals but we do have thousands of copies with minor variants that do not at all change the nature and message of the literature in the New Testament. The manuscripts are one of the biggest evidences of the validity of the New Testament.
Lastly, concerning the assertion that humans can be gods. They surely can since there are humans in this world that are worshiped. But Ras Kass perplexes me given that he condemns Christians for idolatry and then promotes idolatry by referring to himself as a god. Perhaps he is confused with the Bible’s various use of the Hebrew term Eloheem. He quotes, Psalm 82:6,”I say, “You are gods children of the Most High, all of you…” but what he does not reveal is that a) these “gods” were Judges over Israel and since they were judges they were refered to as gods since they were given the authority to judge and b) these “gods” were being diciplined for injustice acts and thus God reminded them who they really were, “mortal men (Ps 82:7). Ras forgot to quote the next verse.
As you see the video, please keep in mind that that kind of thinking is common among many Blacks in American Inner cities who have a vendetta against the Church and take up serious issues with us, some warranted while other unwarranted. Pray for Ras Kass that God would remove the bitterness from his heart and have him submit in willingness to the true God of the Church."
