Israeli archaeologists: 1,400 year old tiny Christian relic found

The link:

JERUSALEM (AP) — A tiny, exquisitely made box found on an excavated street in Jerusalem is a token of Christian faith from 1,400 years ago, Israeli archaeologists said Sunday.
The box, carved from the bone of a cow, horse or camel, decorated with a cross on the lid and measuring only 0.8 inches by 0.6 inches (2 centimeter by 1.5 centimeter), was likely carried by a Christian believer around the end of the 6th century A.D, according to Yana Tchekhanovets of the Israel Antiquities Authority, one of the directors of the dig where the box was found.
When the lid is removed, the remains of two portraits are still visible in paint and gold leaf. The figures, a man and a woman, are probably Christian saints and possibly Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
The box was found in an excavation outside the walls of Jerusalem's Old City in the remains of a Byzantine-era thoroughfare, she said. Uncovered two years ago, it was treated by preservation experts and extensively researched before it was unveiled at an archaeological conference last week.
The box is important in part because it offers the first archaeological evidence that the use of icons in the Byzantine period was not limited to church ceremonies, she said.
Part of a similar box was found three decades ago in Jordan, but this is the only well-preserved example to be found so far, she said. Similar icons are still carried today by some Christian believers, especially from the eastern Orthodox churches.

Capernaum - House of Peter / Ancient Church in Capernaum

As seen from the flickr.com/

Quote:
"The House of Peter is an ancient residence at Capernaum on the Sea of Galilee that's been an obvious object of attention since the 2nd century AD. Archaeological excavations have uncovered a home and subsequent home church that contains ancient writings in the wall plaster mentioning Jesus as "Lord" and "Christ" in Aramaic, Greek, Syriac and Latin. The structure is very close to the ancient synagogue at Capernaum and contains 1st century fish hooks and graffiti references to Peter"

The Cyrus Cylinder

Tells of the persian king's decree allowing the captives held by the Babylonians to return to their lands and to restore their temples. (I got this from a book, but I don't have it in front of me, and so I can't type the source....at least not yet, I gave it to one of my little nieces who is also a history buff. I'll write down the source when I get the chance)

Israel uncovers first Jesus-era house in Nazareth

I found this out by way of TurretinFan. I thought it was a good find, and so I wanted others to know about it as well.

Quote:
"Israeli archaeologists said Monday that they
have uncovered remains of the first dwelling in the northern city of Nazareth
that can be dated back to the time of Jesus.

The find sheds a new light
on what Nazareth might have been like in Jesus' time, said the archaeologists,
indicating that it was probably a small hamlet with about 50 houses populated by
poor Jews.

The remains of a wall, a hideout and a cistern were found
after builders dug up an old convent courtyard in the northern Israeli city,
said archaeologist Yardenna Alexandre of the Israel Antiquities Authority

Alexandre told reporters that archeologists also found clay and chalk
vessels used by Galilean Jews of the time - an indication the home belonged to a
simple Jewish family.

"It was likely Jesus and his childhood friends
would have known the house," said Alexandre.

"From the little written
evidence available we know that first century Nazareth AD was a small Jewish
village located in a valley," Alexandre said, adding that "until now a few
Jesus-era graves were revealed, but never have we unearthed the remains of
contemporary residences."

Jordan archaeologists unearth an ancient church

"Jordan archaeologists have unearthed what could be the
world's oldest church dating back 2,000 years.

Resembling scenes out of
an Indiana Jones movie, scientists explored the underground cavern and
discovered a cave underneath the church which they believe it is an even more
ancient site of Christian worship than the church site above it.

Archaeologist Abdel-Qader Hussein, head of the Rihab Center for
Archaeological Studies, Abdul Qader al-Husan told The Jordan Times:'We have
uncovered what we believe to be the first church in the world, dating from 33 AD
to 70 AD."

the link

'We have evidence to believe this church sheltered the early
Christians - the 70 disciples of Jesus Christ.'

Mr Hussein said there
was evidence that the underground cave was used in the first century after
Christ's death, which would make it the oldest Christian site of worship in the
world.

The cave was unearthed in the northern Jordanian city of Rihab
after three months of excavation and shows evidence of early Christian rituals.

It lies under St. Georgeous church, which was built in 230 A.D.

He described a circular worship area with stone seats separated from
a living area that had a long tunnel leading to a source of water and said the
early Christians hid there from persecution.
A mosaic inscription on the
floor of the later church of St. Georgeous above refers to 'the 70 beloved by
God and the divine' who laid the foundations for the Christian church.
But
Thomas Parker, a historian at the University of North Carolina-Raleigh, who led
the discovery of the church in Aqaba, said that while he hadn't seen the Rihab
site, any such claim should be taken with a degree of caution.
'An
extraordinary claim like this requires extraordinary evidence,' he said.
'We
need to see the artifacts and dating evidence to suggest such an occupation in
the 1st century A.D.'
Mr Parker asked how archaeologists could be certain
whether the 'cave was actually a center of Christian worship"
